Crystallography and cultural heritage: science and passion

Our Institute is pleased to welcome Gilberto Artioli, professor of mineralogy and crystallography at the University of Padova (Italy), here in Melbourne on the occasion of the XXII Meeting of the International Mineralogical Association (13th – 17th August, 2018).

The conference focuses on crystallography and materials science as fundamental tools for the characterization and understanding of materials of different nature, including those relevant for the cultural heritage. The aims of science applied to CH include diagnostics, authentication, conservation, and interpretation of artefacts related to human past. Some invasive and non-invasive techniques applied to cultural heritage materials will be briefly described and some case studies will be discussed, including Eneolithic metal provenance and the strange case of Etruscan numerals.

The conference will be conducted in English.

He received his Laurea Degree from the University of Modena (Italy) and his PhD from the University of Chicago (USA). Artioli’s interests focus on mineralogy and industrial materials, with scientific expertise in the use of combined techniques, including those based at large-scale facilities, to investigate complex materials.

He is a leader expert in Archeometry, the discipline that applies scientific techniques to the analysis of archaeological materials. He is Chair of the International Union of Crystallography’s Commission on Crystallography in Art and Cultural Heritage and the Director of the Research Centre for the Investigation of Cement Materials (CIRCe) in Padova. He is author of more than 300 scientific publications and books and member of several prestigious scientific Academies.
