Cinema Italiano: A Journey through Contemporary Italian Cinema

This film club series aims to introduce the work of modern Italian cinema practitioners along with a session covering key influences on their work. Through group meetings and discussions this series aims to introduce and enlighten attendees to the exciting and creative landscape of modern Italian Cinema.

These group discussions will focus on the work of director Paolo Sorrentino. The filmmaker’s keen wit and subversive comment on culture will be examined and discussed along with his unique visual style. The discussions will also touch upon key themes within the director’s filmography. Participants will have access to the films within the series on loan via the IIC library, and also a chance to experience one of the films featured in the series on the big screen at the historic Astor Theatre.

Cost: $100 – General,  $80 – IIC Members

Cost includes Italian aperitivo each evening and ticket to ‘The Great Beauty’ at The Astor Theatre, July 13th

Zak Hepburn is a Melbourne based film critic and film programmer.

Zak currently reviews films for ABC TV’s national News Breakfast program and appears across several ABC Radio programs. His critical writing work has also appeared in various Fairfax Media publications. From 2010 he has curated film programs for numerous national cinema locations and film festivals, and he is currently the General Manager of historic The Astor Theatre. His passion lies in genre cinema but will watch anything that has a frame rate.
