A talk by Dr Tamara Lewit Honorary Fellow, School of Historical and Philosophical Studies, The University of Melbourne.

Take a walk through Pompeii in 70 CE and experience Roman daily life: drawing on the extraordinary archaeological treasures of the Vesuvian cities—from beds and shrines to takeaway containers and fish bones—this immersive talk brings Roman daily life vividly to life. Prepare to be transported through time, as you see, hear, taste, and smell the rhythms of a long-lost day in Pompeii.

This event is part of the Settimana della Cucina Italiana nel Mondo, presented in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy in Melbourne, COMITES, the Italian Chamber of Commerce, and CO.AS.IT. It will take place on Tuesday 18 November 2025 at 6.30 pm, at CO.AS.IT, 199 Faraday Street, Carlton 3053. Dr Tamara Lewit is an Honorary Fellow in the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies at The University of Melbourne, and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, London. She specializes in the archaeology of wine and oil in the Roman world and her interest in Roman everyday life grew out of her research for two children’s novels by Anna Ciddor. Author of numerous academic publications, she has also published ‘What was it like to be a child in the Roman Empire?’ Pursuit, University of Melbourne (June 2021) and ‘Take fish, salt in vats, leave in sun for months: why ancient Romans loved fermented fish sauces like garum’ The Conversation (July 2025).
