Aiu Fami . Aperitive Concert

19 November

From 11am to 1pm

Abbotsford Convent – Oratory

Alfio Antico

Vocals, frame drums, battente guitar

directed by

Vincenzo Cascone

The Italian Cultural Institute, Melbourne, within the “Sicily,Mediterranean Garden” program of events, presents Ahiu fami. The concert is an opportunity to promote Sicilian artistic and gastronomic excellence through music and songs.

There are many points in common with music and with jazz in particular, but in this show, the music will not be a simple accompaniment. On the contrary, the noises and sounds of the kitchen will become part of the music live performance. The entire sequence of the preparation steps through sounds will become a journey that will take the audience through the rhythm of myths and legends of Southern Italy since Magna Graecia to the contamination with jazz both in its most traditional and experimental forms.

Alfio Antico on the battente guitar will give ‘sounds’ of the kitchen draw their sonorities from the rhythms and crackling of the kitchen, thus becoming part of the performance.

Alfio Antico (1956, Sicily) lived as a shepherd until the age of 18, surrounded by a rustic environment, deeply rooted in nature, where he came into contact with a wide range of local traditions. He learnt to play the beating drum by listening to the wind, animal sounds and the oral stories of the elders. Alfio Antico has thus become a highly respected musician, an acclaimed master of the beating drum who now performs all over the world. His musical collaborations are numerous: his musical instruments have given a distinctive sound to many well-known hits by Italian singers-songwriters such as Lucio Dalla, E. Bennato etc. He makes and decorates all his instruments by hand. Alfio is involved in various projects in Italy and abroad. He has an intense activity as a solo artist in jazz festivals, world music gatherings, contemporary electronic music events as well as a performer in literature and poetry festivals, baroque music ensembles and theatres.
