An on-the-road trip conceived by oenologist Gianfranco Cammarata on a 1971 orange Volkswagen T2 bus, to visit and talk about all the Sicilian territories through the stories of wine producers. Over the past five years Gianfranco Cammarata traveled the entire Sicilian wine territory visiting vineyards, wineries and producers. He will share his adventurous journey-story with the Australian audience.
Through the screening and tasting, the audience will have the opportunity to visit the heart of Sicily, crossing it from north to south, to breathe the true soul of this land and meet the protagonists of an ongoing wine revolution on the island.
In the context of the SCIM event to be held in Melbourne between November 14 and 20, 2022, ‘Traveling between the rows’ proposes a virtual journey to Sicily’s most representative wine places. The editing of the short film is made by Gianfranco Cammarata, on the occasion of “Sicilia, Giardino Mediterraneo”, to narrate the moments and characters encountered thanks to images that bring back to the audience the pure concept of conviviality and hospitality typical of every Sicilian. The screening will be followed by a special tasting of wines from the most evocative territories of Sicily, with a focus on all those wine productions most sensitive to eco-sustainability.
The wine tastings will tell the story of the Mediterranean Garden through the grape varieties of the entire sicilian territory, involving wines that stand out for their flourishing experimentation and richness of grape varieties such as the Etna territories, together with the Muscat wines of the Aeolian Islands, among old and new grapes from the island of Ustica, as well Trapani and Agrigento. Producers belonging to the Sostain circuit are part of the selection. The wine will be accompanied by sweet and savoury food and different Mediterranean delicacies selected in collaboration with chef Carmelo Chiaramonte.
Gianfranco Cammarata, is a vintage collector and wine enthusiast with a past in the world of high quality catering. In viaggio tra i filari was born from the desire to combine his main two interests. The first edition of the ‘Traveling between the rows’ format began in 2008 and involved a tour of the region – including the smaller islands – on a vintage Vespa. Several other tours followed and in 2017 the legendary bus entered the scene. In 2018, he returned along the same route taken ten years earlier, namely the Belice Valley, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the devastating earthquake.
“Traveling between the rows” is curated by Maria Chiara Di Trapani in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute, Melbourne and Laura De Giacomo.
