Physical and social human-robot-AI interaction for health and space applications at IIT

The Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) promotes excellence in basic and applied research to further boost the development of the Italian economy.

Our research, focused on collaboration between different science fields, is based on the following research domains:
Computational Sciences, LifeTech, Nanomaterials, and Robotics.

Such domains create an interdisciplinary research environment to readily face several challenges, developing technology for health, space and other applications.

This talk will first present the development of human-robot interaction skills on the iCub humanoid robot and Artificial Intelligence powered smart environments. The iCub is a humanoid robot designed to support sophisticate interaction owing to its relatively
dexterous hand, moving eyes and head, and overall appearance. Further, a whole-body electronic skin and force sensors allow measuring physical contacts.

By relying on the expressive capabilities of the robot, we have also studied interaction from the cognitive neuroscience perspective. Moreover, we embed intelligence in our physical spaces in order to be reactive and to forecast our needs to create truly assistive AI system to support us in our workplaces and daily life. Finally, we present how the development of AI and robotics at IIT is applied in the space sector by developing autonomous non-wheeled all-terrain rovers and intelligent systems for observation and automated detection of subsoil from satellite imagery.
