Original version.

Restoration promoted by Rogosin Heritage Inc. and carried out in 2006 in the L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in Bologna from the original negatives preserved at the Anthology Film Archives.

The son of a family of Russian Jewish immigrants who became wealthy industrialists, Lionel Rogosin, troubled by the sight of the poor neighbourhood near his Greenwich home, uses his money to produce and direct this symphony of metropolitan decay.

“Rogosin scrutinises tirelessly, relentlessly, without fear of human ugliness, the pavement strewn with rubbish, rotten waste, on which they vegetate, hopeless alcoholics, in this sector of New York hovels, relics of mankind. For this first film of his, he lived with them for six months and made these creatures interpret the squalid everyday life. “(Lotte H. Eisner)
