Investigation film commented by Pasolini, Moravia and Musatti on love and sex in the Italy of the time. By interviewing Italians, from intellectuals to peasants, from North to South, Pasolini carries on a cinéma-vérité of sociological value and civil passion.
“To the group walking or sunbathing, Pasolini holds out his microphone as if in passing: all of a sudden he asks a question about ‘love’, on that uncertain ground where sex, couple, pleasure, family meet , betrothal with its customs, prostitution with its tariffs. Someone makes up his own mind, answers hesitating a little, takes courage, speaks for the others; they approach, approve or mumble, their arms on their shoulders, face to face: laughter, tenderness, a little fever circulate rapidly among those bodies that pile up or brush against each other. Bodies that speak of themselves with greater restraint and distance the more lively and warm the contact is: adults speak overlapping and talk, young people speak rapidly and intertwine. Pasolini the interviewer fades: Pasolini the director looks with his ears wide open. You cannot appreciate the document if you are more interested in what is said than in the mystery that is not uttered. ” (Michel Foucault)
