Set in southern Italy, the narration follows the text of the Gospel of Matthew, from the annunciation to Mary to the resurrection of Christ.
“My reading of the Gospel could only be the reading of a Marxist, but at the same time the fascination of the irrational, of the divine, which dominates the whole Gospel, spread within me. […] How could I have made Herod’s soldiers? To make them with big moustaches, grinding teeth, dressed in rags, like the choirs of the opera? No, I couldn’t do them like that. I dressed them a bit like fascists and I imagined them as fascist squads or as fascists killing Slavic children throwing them in the air. ” (Pier Paolo Pasolini)
