The new Treccani. An overview of the characteristics of the latest tools published by the Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia.

The Italian Cultural Institute of Melbourne, under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic, in honour of the return of the XXII Week of the Italian Language in the World presents a series of lectures in collaboration with Treccani and CO.AS.IT.

The lectures focus on the Italian language and the tools Treccani offers readers to investigate its proper use and countless facets, with a particular focus on the contemporary context, in line with the theme chosen for the Week: “Italian and Youth. Excuse me? I don’t follow you!”

Andrea Felici is a researcher of Italian Linguistics at the University of Urbino.

The lecture will provide a brief overview of three works, edited by Valeria Della Valle and Giuseppe Patota and recently published by the Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia: Treccani Italian Dictionary, designed primarily for younger readers, of the Secondary School of second degree and the three-year university degree, as well as the first vocabulary ever not to present adjectives and nouns favouring a gender; the historical-etymological dictionary, totally different from those published so far, which endeavours to illustrate the history of some of the most significant words of our language in a concise form and easily accessible to the general public; the history of Italian through images, which aims to be a story of the history of Italian not only through words but also through the fundamental images of our culture throughout the centuries. In all cases the new features and characteristics of the instruments will be presented while making comments on particularly noteworthy voices and words.
