As part of the XXV Week of the Italian Language in the World, “Italofonia: lingua oltre i confini”, and on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Andrea Camilleri, the Italian Cultural Institute of Melbourne presents a special program dedicated to the great Sicilian author, entitled Donne di Sicilia – Celebrating the Centenary of the Birth of Andrea Camilleri.
A leading figure of contemporary Italian culture, Camilleri was a writer, playwright, director, and screenwriter who left a profound mark on the international literary and artistic scene. With the famous Inspector Montalbano series, he won the hearts of readers of all ages, while his work also extended to theatre, television, poetry, essays, and radio, giving voice to an imaginative world that continues to resonate with audiences today.
The program, made possible thanks to the valuable material provided by the Camilleri Archive, is structured around several highlights:
-
An exhibition of 15 panels retracing the key stages of the author’s life and career;
-
A theatrical reading of his most significant pages, featuring an online contribution from Prof. Simona Demontis, followed by a discussion with the audience;
-
The screening of the documentary Io e la Rai, offering a unique perspective on his relationship with television.
The common thread of the initiative lies in the unconventional female figures who populate Camilleri’s works: strong, free, and complex women, reflecting a rich and modern narrative universe.
The program will be inaugurated in Melbourne by the Consul General of Italy, Chiara Mauri, and later presented in Adelaide, offering the Australian public the opportunity to rediscover the work and legacy of one of the great masters of Italian literature.
