On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great master of Italian cinema.
“La strada” is the second film presented within the Fellini retrospective organized by Classic Cinemas and promoted by the IIC Melbourne in collaboraton with the IIC Sydney. The film will be screening at the Classic Cinemas Elsternwick to an audience.
The IIC Melbourne has invited Elisabetta Ferrari (Lecturer in Italian Studies, University of Melbourne) to introduce every film in the program.

LA STRADA (1954)

Plot: When Gelsomina, a naïve young woman, is purchased from her impoverished mother by brutish circus strongman Zampanò to be his wife and partner, she loyally endures her husband’s coldness and abuse as they travel the Italian countryside performing together. Soon Zampanò must deal with his jealousy and conflicted feelings about Gelsomina when she finds a kindred spirit in Il Matto, the carefree circus fool, and contemplates leaving Zampanò.
The movie won an Oscar in 1954 as Best Foreign Language Film.
