Ciancicato Miao, a widower, remarries with Assurda Caì who, deaf and dumb, transforms her hut into a neat fairy tale house. Ciancicato and his son, never happy with what they have, want a new one and to make up for money they plan a fake suicide. A comic tale in which ideology is hidden, mysterious, unpredictable.

“Totò is such a human person, he is so naive, so normal, so clownish … all I did was to accentuate the clownish side. The same thing for Ninetto… there is something magical about Ninetto, and I have accentuated this character. This is what I actually did: I pointed out features that already existed, I didn’t invent anything. ” (Pier Paolo Pasolini)
