The Italian Institute of Culture proudly partners with Melbourne Cinematheque & ACMI to present an extraordinary event. This season celebrates the indelible mark of Suso Cecchi D’Amico.
“I am not a poet. I am an artisan.” These words from the legendary Italian scriptwriter Suso Cecchi D’Amico resonate deeply as we reflect on her remarkable contributions to cinema.
In a 1999 interview, Cecchi D’Amico shared her unique perspective on the art of filmmaking: “Cinema is not an art… it may be that it gives you that impression, but it is reality.” Despite her humble self-assessment, her impact on the medium was profound.
Born into a world of artistry in Rome, Cecchi D’Amico found her calling in screenwriting almost by chance. Her collaborations produced remarkable cinematic achievements, each infused with her passion and dedication.
From the neorealist classic Bicycle Thieves to a diverse array of genres and styles, Cecchi D’Amico’s versatility knew no bounds. She worked closely with iconic directors like Luchino Visconti, Mario Monicelli, and Luigi Comencini, shaping narratives with meticulous attention to detail.
