Restless, passionate, fearless, Michelangelo Buonarroti is an artist of a thousand contradictions, always balancing between ruin and a blaze of glory. He feels an undeniable need to work, he can’t live without a chisel in his hand. Everyone knew him, many admired him, others were his enemy. The passion that dominates him carries him to love life and art, but also to collide with whomever stood in his way, from the Pope to his more famous rivals. He hates Leonardo for his over-the-top vanity, he envies Raffaello for his sudden success. Shunned by the artistic community, he produced masterpieces in total solitude, living intense and dramatic relationships with his works of art: in hand to hand combat with the marble he’s sculpting, like with David, in an intimate and jealous embrace with the affresco, like for the Sistine Chapel.
The Art Historian Costantino D’Orazio will guide us through the pathways of the heart and mind of Buonarroti. He will unveil what tormented the artist but also the way he worked, to bring into the light the emotions that animated his works.
