of Italian cuisine for people’s health and the protection of the planet“

Sicily, Mediterranean Garden is a synthesis of the values of biodiversity and complexity and aims to promote quality Sicilian cuisine starting from it’s protagonists: oil, ancient grains, wine, honey, chocolate, prickly pear.

Sicily, a sunny and generous land, cradle and crossroads of civilizations and ancient myths, is now the new frontier of taste. Sicilian agriculture and gardens, an expression of knowledge that is enriched by drawing the best of every cultural heritage, are the result of the large and complex mosaic typical of Mediterranean systems that stand out for their multifunctional environmental and cultural production. The garden is therefore a synthesis of the island’s cultural richness, a place where different forms of life mix and adapt to coexist.

Sicily, Garden of the Mediterranean will be the occasion to narrate in Melbourne, in its entirety, a gustatory journey of an Italian region straddling three continents: from the variety of landscapes and climatic heterogeneity to which a diversity of soil is added, to the rich articulation of products and typicality from west to east, from the fertile slopes of Etna to the black bee honeys of the Aeolian islands, from the grains of the Iblei to the centuries-old olive oils of ancient valleys such as the Kolymbetra.

It will also be an opportunity to promote, through the research and commitment of botanists, agronomists, small and large entrepreneurs, a unique territory, a hybrid of ecological, biological, cultural, climates and morphologies in which the diversity necessary for the complexity of efficient systems.

Thanks to a scientific committee composed of professor Paolo Inglese Director of SiMua in Palermo, chef Carmelo Chiaramonte, oenologist Gianfranco Cammarata, professor Giuseppe Barbera whose work inspired research, title and concept, Sicily becomes the ideal place to investigate the changes underway in the third millennium, to develop new perspectives for sustainable development through taste, flavors, products and the commitment of the companies involved.

Guests will share knowledge and perspectives with the Australian public and disseminate production and consumption models to raise awareness, starting from Sicily, of the importance of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The artist Emilia Faro is the author of the work that represents Sicily, Mediterranean Garden: all the botanical elements used in the visual communication of the events are taken from her works.
