Urban Biodiversity as Anticipation

Urban Biodiversity as Anticipation

Architect Azzurra Muzzonigro, will open her talk with the theme about the "Vertical Forest" by Stefano Boeri.

"Vertical Forest is a model for a sustainable residential building, a project for metropolitan reforestation contributing to the regeneration of the environment and urban biodiversity without the implication of expanding the city upon the territory. It is a model of vertical densification of nature within the city that operates in relation to policies for reforestation and naturalization of large urban and metropolitan borders. The first example of the Vertical Forest consisting of two residential towers of 110 and 76 m height, was realized in the centre of Milan, on the edge of the Isola neighbourhood, hosting 900 trees (each measuring 3, 6 or 9 meters) and over 20,000 plants from a wide range of shrubs and floral plants distributed according to the sun exposure of the facade."

Then the screening of the short film "The Flying Gardeners", directed and produced by Blink Fish, will follow.

Photos by Italian artist Laura Cionci  inspired by forest and roof gardens will be shown during the presentation of the book "Un bosco verticale" published by Corraini.

The talk will continue about the combination between architecture and Biodiversity within Waiting Posthuman, a research platform where Cionci and Muzzonigro have been working together with Leonardo Caffo.

The themes explored on the platform refer to the potential of Biodiversity in urban transformations: the non-anthropocentric approach to the urban phenomena is a key aspect of a new balance between Human, Nature and Agricultural spheres. Opposite to Sustainability that is strongly focused on limiting the anthropic effects on the living planet, Biodiversity, by encouraging the re-colonization of animal species of the urban environment, looks at re-balancing the relations between complexity and identity in any living species.

The talk will be in English.
