Italian Cine-scapes #2: Urban Space and Architecture Portrayed in 9 Movies
Palace Cinemas and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Melbourne, in collaboration with Istituto Luce Cinecittà, present the second edition of the successful series Italian Cine-scapes with a new exciting selection of movies that reveal the internal and external landscapes of a bygone and contemporary Italy.
The monthly Sunday night screenings from April until December will be preceded by an aperitivo in the foyer, courtesy of Ciccio & Ciccia Italian Bar & Restaurant at 6pm, a brief introduction to the film, followed by the screening.
Sunday, 1st September 2019: Miracolo a Milano/Miracle in Milan, Vittorio De Sica [1951, 100’]
Introduction by Christian Pazzaglia, a multidisciplinary curator, artistic director and producer working in Amsterdam and Sydney.
Vittorio DeSica’s follow-up to The Bicycle Thief documents the lives of the poverty-stricken in post-war Italy. Francesco Golisano is Good Toto, an orphan boy who begins living with a cluster of beggars. His organizational efforts bring structure to the colony and engenders a sense of faint happiness among its dwellers.
Adapted for the screen by Cesare Zavattini and Vittorio De Sica from the former’s novel Totò il buono (1940), Miracolo a Milano is a powerful work of social protest in the guise of allegorical fantasy.
