The picaresque journey of a father and son (the splendid, unexpected couple Totò-Ninetto Davoli), accompanied by a talking crow, along the roads of Italy during the economic boom and the New Prehistory. They meet wandering artists, crooks, employers' engineers, miserable peasants, thriving prostitutes and Dante dentists. Pasolini recounts the crisis of Marxist ideology in a fairytale key and enhances the aggressiveness and the lunar sweetness of Totò's mask.

“I have never given a farewell to a film, so defenceless, so delicate, so reserved as 'Uccellacci e uccellini'. Not only does it not look like my previous films, it looks like no other films. I'm not talking about its originality, it would be stupidly presumptuous, but about its formula, which is that of the fable with its hidden meaning. A fable that, like all of them, consists of a series of tests through which the heroes must pass. My heroes, in this case, after similar tests, however, do not seem to obtain any privileges: neither kingdoms nor princesses. It remains for them, after those tests, to face other tests. No real fairy tale had ever ended like this. " (Pier Paolo Pasolini)
