IIC MELBOURNE - 2018 IIC PRIZE FOR ITALIAN LITERARY TRANSLATION - 3rd Edition
This prize aims to promote Italian literature in English translation and to acknowledge and reward excellence in translation in the states of Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia.

Entries to be submitted via e-mail at iicmelbourne@esteri.it by Friday 14th September at 11.55pm AEST
Entrants are required to translate Wu Ming’s short story “Momodou” from "Crimini Italiani" (the Italian Crime Anthology) edited by Giancarlo De Cataldo (Einaudi Stile Libero, 2008): a copy of the text is available on request (email to iicmelbourne@esteri.it)
The winner will receive a cash prize of $AU 3000 for the completion of a translation project, a return flight to Italy and one-month stay at the "Casa delle Traduzioni" in central Rome during the period January or February 2019.
The winning translation will be published, along with a short commentary from the translator, in The AALITRA Review, the peer-reviewed open-access journal of the Australian Association for Literary Translation (AALITRA).
Ed. 2018/IIC Prize for Italian Literary Translation - LUCIANA D'ARCANGELI is the winner of the Prize for her translation of Wu Ming’s short story “Momodou”.
Jury comments:
The judges were very impressed by the high standard of entries in this year’s IIC Premio alla Traduzione. The text for translation posed a number of challenges, including a mix of registers and of colloquial varieties of Italian. The winning entry tackled the challenges admirably, bringing Wu Ming’s important and moving story to a new audience. It will be published next year in The AALITRA Review, the electronic journal of the Australian Association for Literary Translation.
The translation by Julian Izzo was "Highly Commended".

Ed. 2017/IIC Prize for Italian Literary Translation - TIM CUMMINS is the winner of the Prize.
Jury comments:
Tim’s was an excellent translation accompanied by an insightful comment on the content, tone and style of Mario Soldati’s story, and on his own strategies for recreating these in English. The project Tim wishes to carry out at the Casa delle Traduzioni is a translation of Paolo Nori’s Noi la farem vendetta, a work of creative nonfiction that explores the real-life killing of protestors by police in Reggio Emilia in 1960. Tim makes a persuasive argument as to why this this work, in which Nori “reflects on family, grief, the responsibilities of individual citizens and the fierce and persisting ideological divisions in Italian society, deserves to reach an international audience. He listed a number of independent presses with whom he can discuss publication possibilities for what promises to be an important new Italian work available for the first time in English.
The translations by Denise Formica and Patrick Glennan were "Highly Commended".

Premio alla Traduzione 2016
The Istituto Italiano di Cultura (IIC) Melbourne now invites entries for its inaugural Premio alla Traduzione 2016.
The Premio alla Traduzione aims to promote Italian literature in English translation and to acknowledge and reward excellence in translation in the states of Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia.
The winner will receive a cash prize of $AU 3000 for the completion of a translation project, a return flight to Italy and 1 or 2 months’ stay at the Casa delle Traduzioni in central Rome during the period January or February 2017.
The winning translation will be published, along with a short commentary from the translator, in The AALITRA Review, the peer-reviewed open-access journal of the Australian Association for Literary Translation (AALITRA).
Entrants are required to submit
· their translation of Erri De Luca’s short story “Il Pannello” (entrants should buy a copy of the book “In alto a sinistra” by Erri De Luca, published by Feltrinelli, Italy
· a full CV, including details of any published literary or scholarly translations;
· a description of the literary translation project they would like to undertake at the Casa delle Traduzioni, including any publication possibilities they envisage;
· proof of Australian citizenship (e.g. scanned copy of passport);
· proof of residence in Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania or Western Australia (e.g. scanned copy of driver license or utility bill).

Terms and Conditions:
The competition is only open to Australian citizens who, at the time of submission, are residing in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia or Tasmania (the official jurisdiction of the IIC Melbourne).
Your translation must be entirely your own work. Only electronic submissions will be accepted. Late or incomplete entries will not be accepted. Once submitted, translations cannot be revised.
By entering, participants consent to their translation being published in The AALITRA Review if the prize is awarded.
Entrants must be willing to stay at the Casa delle Traduzioni in central Rome for a minimum of one month during the months of January or February 2017.
Employees and immediate family members of employees of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura
Melbourne, the Italian Consulate-General in Melbourne, the Italian Consulates in Perth and
Adelaide, and members and immediate family of the judging panel, are ineligible to enter.
The decisions of the experts panel judging the translations are final

ii. that your translation is entirely your own work
iii. that you consent to be included on the Istituto Italiano di Cultura’s mailing list, through which winners will be publicly announced (you may unsubscribe at any time)
