A Traveller’s Dream: Piranesi and Rome – at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura

26 February— 4 June 2014

A photographic exhibition by Graziano Panfili

EXTENDED TO 4 JUNE! A Traveller’s Dream: Piranesi and Rome by multi-award winning Italian photographer Graziano Panfili, is the dream of a modern-day traveller, eager to know today the places depicted in Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s etchings from more than two hundred years ago.

Panfili’s images provide a unique, dream-like interpretation of some of the most famous Roman locations and monuments immortalised by Piranesi, such as the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and the Roman Forum, as well as lesser-known places in and around the Eternal City.

The artist has also reflected on the question “What would Piranesi have etched today?”, and his response is a selection of images from Rome’s modern architectural landscape, including Zaha Hadid’s MAXXI – the National Museum of XXI Century Arts, and Renzo Piano’s Parco della Musica Auditorium.

Italian artist and architect Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) is considered one of Europe’s most famous and respected printmakers.

Official opening on 25 February 2014 (6.30pm – 9.00pm) in the presence of the Italian Ambassador to Australia, His Exellency Pier Francesco Zazo.

Exhibition hours: Mon-Thu 9.30am -12.30am & 2.30pm -5.30pm Fri 9.30am -12.30pm
