The Italian Cultural Institute offers the possibility of taking the CILS exam (Certification of Italian as a Foreign Language). The CILS certification is a qualification that attests to the level of linguistic and communicative competence in Italian as a second language. The CILS was designed and realised within the research centre of the University for Foreigners of Siena and is a certification recognised by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
For whom?
The CILS is useful for all those who study Italian, for those who work and study in a context where Italian is the spoken language and for those who wish to certify their skills and knowledge of Italian as a second language. Each CILS level refers to the ability to communicate in different contexts and situations.
Due to the recent amendments to the Italian law it is now compulsory to take the Italian B1 level for citizenship.This new law states that all those who apply for the Italian citizenship, either if they are married to an Italian or if they are resident in Italy, must prove an adequate knowledge of the Italian language: at least the B1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for languages).The IIC organizes courses in preparation for the B1 citizenship CILS exam, in order to give you the tools to obtain your certification.

How to register for the exam
The registration form must be completed and returned to IIC Melbourne with proof of identity by the stated deadline for each session. In addition to the examination fee for each level, a $120 administration fee is required.
In the case of candidates who repeat one or more CILS skills and therefore, do not need to take the full exam, the administrative fee is $70.
Please note: In the case of failure to pass the CILS B1 citizenship exam, there is no repeat of a single component, but a repeat of the entire exam.
