The IIC Melbourne proudly announces the 2021 Play-Back edition curated by Elvira Frosini and Daniele Timpano, an exclusive review dedicated to contemporary Italian theatre for the Southern Hemisphere.

“A world summed up in 10 plays. Ten months for ten shows. Over the next 10 months Play-Back 2021 will present the show of an Italian theatre company which we think is significant in the world of contemporary Italian theatre production. One a month, just one, to allow you to set a time to watch it, watch it again, talk about it and recommend it to your circle of friends.
We hold that theatre, the real stuff, can only be seen live on a stage and as such we don’t want to take the place of “live theatre”, the place where we all hope to return as soon as we are able to; rather we want to take advantage of this forced break to introduce a wider Australian audience to a theatrical production that would find it difficult to come all this way to Australia but that we believe is worth discovering.

The videos we will be sharing with you are those used by the theatre companies to promote their shows and get booked for festivals and theatres.

Through Play-Back 2021 we would like to reach out to all those users who were the original audience of these videos by introducing Italian theatre companies and promoting their shows to festival programmers and Australian theatres that might not have had the opportunity to know about or discover them.
In other words, we hope to whet your appetite for contemporary Italian theatre, which can give so much to an International audience, and who knows, you may fall in love with it and want to bring it physically here to Australia or perhaps just enjoy it in Italy at a beautiful theatre festival, on the billboards of local theatres, and on any other occasion which might appear.” (Frosini-Timpano)
